Rising Nitrate Levels in Groundwater
On 31st December 2024, the Central Ground Water Board's (CGWB) latest annual report revealed alarming trends in groundwater quality, with a significant increase in districts facing excessive nitrate contamination.
Findings of the Report
- The number of districts with excessive nitrate levels in groundwater has surged from 359 in 2017 to 440 in 2023, affecting more than half of India's districts.
- Over 19.8% of the 15,239 groundwater samples analyzed showed nitrate levels above safe limits, a slight decrease from 21.6% in 2017.
- Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu reported the highest levels of nitrate contamination, with 49%, 48%, and 37% of the samples exceeding ....
