Hayli Gubbi Volcano Erupts After 12,000 Years
On 23rd November 2025, the Hayli Gubbi volcano in northeastern Ethiopia erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, releasing a massive high-altitude volcanic plume that drifted across the Indian region before heading toward China.
- The eruption produced no lava but generated large amounts of gas and fine ash particles that rose 15-40 km into the atmosphere, carried upward by superheated air around the volcano.
- The volcanic ash cloud was positioned at altitudes used by long-haul commercial aircraft (10–14 km), posing risks such as reduced visibility, clogging of sensors, engine malfunction, and exposure to gases like sulphur dioxide.
