Greenland’s Lakes Turn Brown, Emit Carbon
A recent study, titled ‘Abrupt transformation of west Greenland lakes following compound climate extremes associated with atmospheric rivers,’ published in January 2025, revealed the extreme weather events (in 2022) that caused over 7,500 lakes in western Greenland to change drastically.
What Happened to the Lakes?
- Change in Colour and Emissions: The lakes, which once had clear blue water, turned brown. This caused an increase in carbon emissions, with the lakes releasing 350% more carbon dioxide than before.
