UNESCO Adds 16 New Sites to Global Geoparks Network
On 17th April 2025, UNESCO added 16 new geoparks across 11 countries to its Global Geoparks Network, marking the programme’s 10th anniversary and expanding the total to 229 sites globally.
- The additions span China, North Korea, Ecuador, Indonesia, Italy, Norway, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the UK, and Vietnam.
- North Korea joins the list for the first time, while Saudi Arabia makes a strong debut with two newly designated sites.
- The Global Geoparks Network now spans nearly 855,000 sq. km—comparable to Namibia’s land area—and covers 50 countries.
- India currently has no site on the UNESCO Global Geoparks list as of July 2024.
