World's Largest Coral Discovered near Solomon Islands
On 14th November 2024, marine scientists announced the discovery of the world’s largest coral near the Solomon Islands in the Pacific, a remarkable find that offers hope for coral ecosystems amid global environmental challenges.
About the Discovery
- Scientists discovered a massive coral structure near the southeastern tip of the Solomon Islands, measuring 34 meters wide and 32 meters long, three times larger than the previous record holder, "Big Momma" in American Samoa.
- The coral is formed by nearly one billion polyps and has been growing for over 300 years, making it a distinct and standalone structure rather than a coral reef ....
