Scarlet Dragonfly Sighting in Munnar
A rare scarlet dragonfly (Crocothemis erythraea) was recently spotted in the valleys of Munnar, Kerala, marking an interesting addition to the Western Ghats’ insect biodiversity.
- Commonly known as broad scarlet, common scarlet-darter, or scarlet darter, it belongs to the dragonfly family Libellulidae.
- The species is widely distributed in southern Europe, Africa, and across western Asia up to southern China, though individuals sometimes travel far from their usual habitats.
- Scarlet dragonflies prefer habitats near water bodies such as rivers, streams, and ponds, and favour sunny spots over shaded areas.
