Microplastics in Antarctic Snow
According to a recently published research, microplastics have been found, for the first time, in freshly fallen snow in Antarctica. The pollutant poses a growing threat to the region’s ecosystem and could increase the melting of ice and snow.
About Microplastics
- Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that are smaller than 5 mm in length.
- Types: There are two types of microplastics, namely primary and secondary.
- Primary Microplastics: These are tiny particles that are purposely designed as such for commercial use, like in cosmetics, nurdles (plastic pellets used in industrial manufacturing) and in fibres from synthetic textiles like nylon.
