India and US to Reactivate Indian Ocean Observing System (IndOOS)
Recently, India and the US decided to revive the Indian Ocean Observing System (IndOOS), consisting of 36 moored buoys in the high seas to gather high-resolution ocean and atmospheric data for weather forecasts.
Reactivation of IndOOS
- The IndOOS array of buoys, vital for weather forecasting, had fallen into neglect and disrepair during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in significant gaps in observational data.
- The moored buoys are part of the Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA) program, established through collaboration between the Ministry of Earth Sciences and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2008.
