Just Transition in India: Shifting from Coal to Renewable Energy
On 15th October, 2024, NITI Aayog constituted a body to study India’s ‘just transition’ from coal to renewable energy sources.
- This move follows Union Finance Minister’s commitment in her Budget speech in July, 2024, to unveil a national policy document that will lay out energy transition pathways in India that will balance the imperatives of employment, growth and environmental sustainability.
Defining ‘Just Transition’
A just energy transition is a development intervention to achieve the following outcomes:
