National Statistics Day
National Statistics Day is celebrated every year on 29 June to mark the birth anniversary of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis’s work in the field of Statistics.
- The day was observed for the first time on June 29, 2007.
- PC Mahalanobis is known as the father of Indian statistics.
- He was also a member of the first Planning Commission of India.

- In 1950, he established the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) with a Statistical Laboratory.
- He started publication of Sankhya, a statistical journal of the Institute, in 1933 along the lines of Karl Pearson’s Biometrika.
