First Merger of Unequal-mass Binary Black Holes
An international team of scientists has detected gravitational waves emanating from the first ever merger of two binary black holes of unequal masses.
GW190412: The Merger
- The event, named GW190412, involved two black holes of unequal masses coalescing.
- One of the black holes was 30 times the mass of the Sun whereas the other had a mass nearly 8 times the solar mass. The merger took place at a distance of about 2.5 billion light years from the Earth.
- The merger sent out highly-sensitive gravitational wave signals which were detected using Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo, located in the US ....
