TRAPPIST-1e: New Earth-Like Planet May Hold the Right Conditions for Life

Scientists have recently identified a new Earth-sized planet that may have the right conditions to sustain life.

  • Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), researchers at Cornell University found evidence suggesting the planet—TRAPPIST-1e—could have a secondary atmosphere similar to Earth’s, potentially allowing liquid water to exist on its surface.

  • Distance from Earth: ~40 light-years
  • Discovered: 2016
  • Planets: At least seven Earth-sized planets
  • Special Candidate: TRAPPIST-1e lies in the habitable zone
