Nagshankar Temple: Model for Turtle Conservation

  • On 23 May 2025 (World Turtle Day), Nagshankar, in northeastern Assam’s Biswanath district, has been designated a model temple for turtle conservation.
  • Nagshankar Temple is an ancient Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra within the administrative district of Biswanath in Assam.
  • Turtles have traditionally been conserved in several temple ponds of Assam as they are believed to be a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu.
