​WHO Updates Bacterial Priority Pathogens List

On 17th May, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its list of Bacterial Priority Pathogens List (BPPL) which it considers the biggest threat to human health.

  • The updates are the first since the WHO released its initial Bacterial Priority Pathogens List (BPPL) in 2017.

Rationale behind Updation

  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an evolving threat that challenges the effectiveness of existing treatments.
  • R&D of new antibacterial agents has not kept pace with the rapid evolution of resistance, leaving a substantial gap in the ability to properly address the unmet needs of patients.
