WHO Declares India Trachoma Free
On 8th October, 2024, World Health Organisation (WHO) recognised that India has successfully eliminated trachoma, a bacterial infection that affects the eyes, as a public health problem.
- India is the third country in the Southeast Asia Region to achieve this status other than Nepal & Myanmar.
- The WHO defines the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem when the prevalence of trachomatous trichiasis is less than 0.2% in people aged 15 years and above, and the prevalence of active trachoma in children aged 1-9 years is less than 5%.
