India Abstains from Voting on UN Resolution related to Capital Punishment and Torture

On 28 June UN General Assembly adopted the resolution ‘Towards torture-free trade: examining the feasibility, scope and parameters for possible common international standards’.

  • During the vote, 81 UN members voted in favour of the resolution and 20 against it, with 44 abstentions. India also abstained from voting on the resolution.
  • The resolution sought to establish common international standards for the import, export and transfer of goods used for “capital punishment, torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
